Ohlone

English Description
The Coastnoan, also known as the Ohlone people, are people from the central and northern California Coast. The term “Ohlone” was used to rename the Coastnoan people since the 1970s by some of their descendents and mostly by ethnographers, historians, and writers.
In the 18th century when the Spanish and missionaries began exploring the rest of California, the Ohlone were at the time inhabiting what is now known as the San Francisco Bay through the Monterey Bay and part of the lower Salinas Valley. During this time the Ohlone people spoke a variety of dialects, as there were more than 50 different groups that made the Ohlone people. Like most of the natives at the time, they survived by hunting, fishing, and gathering.
During the 15th and 16th century as the Spanish Missions in California were beginning to be established, the Ohlone people were directly affected in the sense of their religion and population. The Ohlone’s religion of Kuksu was replaced by Catholicism and their people took a dramatic drop as they were replaced and used as slaves to build the missions. Today, the remaining Ohlone descendants no longer live in their original territory, but are scattered throughout most of northern and central California.
