Privacy - Lina Wett

In the 21th century we are experiencing a social change which can be compared in its impact with the industrial revolution in the 19th century. The previous analogue society develops to a digital society. The digitalisation penetrates our social life as well as our working world. The industrialisation caused a process of social adjustment. New regulations must have been made to establish humanely work and life conditions. Also during the current change there are adaptions, restrictions and regulations necessary. Only in this way it will be possible to maintain our living conditions including ethic, human right and human dignity. #StoryBehindTheKeyword

This social change also involves the rearranging of privacy. Privacy is a right that people were fighting for in the past and it is now threatened again through the new conditions. In the history this conditions changed several times. In the medieval times only aristocratic people had the privilege of private rooms. Most people had to share room and even beds; the interiors weren’t for comfort but practical. Also during the industrial revolution the private room had a great importance. It was a contrast to the unrestless of the outside world. It created an oasis of peace and calm the people needed. Privacy was clearly distinguished of public. Nowadays it is not as obvious as it was during the industrial revolution, the borders blur.
The digital development went insidiously and the awareness of the protection of privacy is not formed jet. Through the progressive digitalisation our privacy gets more and more restricted. The increasing integration of technical devices into our life makes it almost impossible to revolt against it. #ephemeral?
As an indicator for freedom privacy is a very important basic component of our society and shouldn’t be handled frivolously. Privacy is directly affected by the current changes of the 21th century and must be necessarily secured, that is why privacy is an important keyword for the specification of this time.
