Pop - Brainstorming - Malte-Kristof Müller

To rearrange POP
To talk about “POP” as a keyword for the 21st Century, it´s necessary to make the word more meaningful. In order to do so, i´ll link it to a few other keywords, which seem to expand the single word “POP”.
There are two important words: “money” and “art”. Behind each one is a large number of people. These two words, as I put it, cultivate the word “POP.” They also make way for other words which are linked to this context. With “Money,” comes companies, products, customers, industries, commercials. With “Art,” comes literature, movies, music, education, soul and inspiration. What seems to be just a loose line up of words from a brainstorm, brings the first idea of what POP consists of and will be the background of the following thesis.

Adorno described how culture turned into products. This text tries to point out if you can say today, that products turned back into culture again? And how this possibly effects culture culture, especially Art? Art has the ability to create new realities in the world as we know it. As a window to look behind the borders of our perspective, which is colored by our social, cultural and subjective experiences. If Art, in all it´s meanings, becomes a product of a commercial idea, it looses the characteristic of leading mankind to knew ideas, to inspire and to educate our souls. This is consistent in this theses, but more importantly, it looses its ability to criticize. Art, overwhelmed by capitalistic interests, can´t think out of the system from which it get’s its legitimization. This process is taken all together by the word POP.

The public discussion about the Transatlantic Trade and Investment Partnership (TTIP) between the European Union and the United States of America is a concrete example which shows the actuality of this topic. It is not just an economic contract. It will influence the structures of cultural support in the EU, which are now characterized by pluralistic ways of how the state supports culture and art, and therefore preserve a liberal artistic work. This should be seen as a treasure.
