Sights and Sounds Note 5
As Mumma recalled:
I would like to thank Gordon Mumma for his correspondence. His valuable insight helped me piece together the beginning of the Cage-Cunningham 1968 California tour and the compositional and collaborative process in the piece Assemblage. From the time we completed our work -- Merce, the dancers and us three musicians -- we had no input to how KQED did their final editing for the premiere TV broadcast.
That final KQED editing occurred after we left for our performance-tours elsewhere. A few of us were able to see some early KQED editing, which chopped up much of our continuity and added their own distracting material. Merce was not pleased.
Many months went by before the broadcast premiere, which none of us had seen. So that aspect became an unhappy situation historically for the Cunningham Dance Co.
In the context of that time the TV broadcast premiere was controversial but celebrated by others who had seen it. Therefore it is similar to the public-reception controversies which surrounded the Lincoln Center premiere of the Cage/Cunningham VARIATIONS V in 1965.
But the working process for the Cunningham Co. people during the filming was much liked and celebrated. Cage, myself and Tudor had a wonderful time with our "sound-work". And that is apparent from the photo-page of us working together.
