12020-05-06T14:50:29-07:00A Deluxe Book of Poetry25image_header2020-05-19T13:19:59-07:00Jittai waka (17--?) is a a deluxe, sturdy, and highly decorative manuscript book of poetry bound in the accordion (orihon), or concertina, style which is designed to have two pages open at once: a page with poetic text on the right and a page with an illustration on the left. It can stay open like this, without the viewer having to hold the book; ideal for displaying each two-page spread as a work of art.
The pages are made of thick cardboard onto which decorative paper with classical (waka) poetry and paintings are carefully glued. This paper is decorated with blue and purple cloud patterns known as "cloud paper" (kumogami). Gold leaf is also applied for a decorative border on each page and as a design element in an image.
Strips of brocade fabric are used to create decorative front and back covers and the book is enclosed in a wood storage box, further elevating the status of the book and its owner.
