Itinera's Displacements: A Roundtable

Itinera's Displacements: Front Matter

We are pleased to present this digital roundtable to the readers of Journal18. It contains contributions from six authors, all focusing on the topic of Itinera, a web-based digital humanities project that engages with modelling and visualizing culturally-motivated travel in the 18th and 19th centuries. It is housed in the Visual Media Workshop at the University of Pittsburgh.

Editor's Comments
  1. -Provide the link to the Pitt Visual Media Workshop to this page, so that the reader can get there easily
  2. -But also please add a short phrase describing what the remit and purview of the VMW is. The visitor will want to know if this is a physical space (or just a weekly get together, for instance), and what its purview and attachments are (ie its relationship to the dept of art history and its teaching agenda).
  3. -It would be useful to add in, as the second paragraph, a section that says something about the structure of work, thus setting up who the various people whose names follow below are. Something like: Students at Pitt have served as significant collaborators on Itinera since its inception, with a staff of both graduate and undergraduate assistants who have conducted research, entered data, and supported the technical needs of the project. Their voices are included prominently in this roundtable, along with those of the academic and technical directors of Itinera. (Or something like that – just so that the readers understand what is going on. You might want to say that each graduate student project manager adopted a major agent or agents that appear in Itinera for research and they are primarily responsible for building those records. I understand that this means that there might be some repetition in different segments of the roundtable, but a certain amount of repetition is OK, especially because people will only read certain parts and not necessarily in order.
  4. I would move the section about the notes to the end and also add a few lines about the structure of this project, along these lines: Student collaborators have contributed different pieces that reflect their own engagement with the project. These “displacements” are numbered, but may be read in any order. These are framed at the beginning and end by reflective pieces that situate their work within the context of the larger project. (Or something like that)
Scattered throughout the text you will find a few Scalar notes. Clicking these links will not take you away from the current page, but will instead reveal brief annotations about the highlighted phrases. These notes repeat across the contributions, creating connections and reminders between and across these texts.

The contributors to this roundtable are listed in alphabetical order, designating our equal efforts on this piece. We are all currently affiliated with the University of Pittsburgh.
