The Critical Scope of Focus: Fixation’s Plight In Environmentalism

Human instinct causes fixation throughout multiple disciplines of focus, and causes often-important ideas and concepts to be overlooked. In some cases, this fixation upon the first passing idea can cloud other thoughts that may be even more effective than the first. Technological solutions to environmental problems are largely ineffective. The current degree of environmental decline can be attributed to fixation upon technology as the universal answer for solving problems.
  • Technology fails to completely solve environmental problems; it only optimizes systems that intend to conserve the environment.
  • The environmental impact of producing technological systems to conserve the environment negates those system’s benefits.
  • Although technological solutions to environmental problems do not completely solve conservationism’s demands, they do, when implemented correctly, provide some benefit to the environment.
  • Because fixation garners technology more support than other conservation methods, too much focus is directed to the technology itself, not using technology to solve the environmental problem.
  • In some cases, technological systems intended for environmental benefit harm the ecosystem.

Technology’s pre-packaged method for environmentalism is not effective. Between technology costing the environment resources, preventing the natural existence of biospheres, and lagging behind the current demand for environmental solutions, technology is not effectively solving environmental problems. A new approach to environmentalism, one focused on real solutions, not the development of theoretically profound technologies, must be adopted in order to produce a substantive environmental impact now and in the future.
