Japan occupied the three northeastern provinces and invaded China's interior. The war of resistance against the Japanese Invasion broke out in 1937. According to China's Bloody Century by R.J. Rummel, 3,800,000-10,600,000+ military casualties occurred in this war. 266,800-1,000,000 prisoners of war died. When Nanjing, the capital of the Kuomintang, fell in mid-December 1937, Japanese troops carried out the Nanjing Massacre on the city. 300,000 Chinese civilians and surrendered troops were killed (Britannica). Also, according to Britannica, tens of thousands of women, known as "comfort women," were raped on the orders of Japanese commander Iwatane Matsui.
