Not only are they geographically close, but they are also similar in their colonial beginnings, movements to end slavery in their respective countries, and moves towards Independence from the European colonists. However, as seen today, Haiti and the Bahamas ended up with extremely different outcomes with Haiti facing mass poverty of their local citizens and the Bahamas being the richest country in the West Indies. How exactly can two countries who both faced the same struggles against colonialism and slavery how such differing outcomes in modern times? Much of this is due to the ways in which their Independence came about, their economic situations, and what external factors still affect them today. Another important factor in these countries is a comparison of their culture and arts. These give insight into what their histories looked like, seeing as the music, dance, and art are reflective of ancestral roots from different areas. Lastly, environmental factors can contribute to different outcomes as well.
