INTL 190 - Haiti in a Transnational Context

Introduction - Xin

Recently, the conflict problem between Russia and Ukraine has been in hot discussion. The situation in Ukraine has been deteriorating. As Russia's special military action continuously deepens and stalemates in Ukraine, the relationship between Russia and Ukraine has been in a state of complete crack. In a world where peace and cooperation have been the mainstream in dealing with international affairs, the issue between Russia and Ukraine reminds people of the potential unstable relationships among countries under the superficial tone of peace and cooperation and the importance of maintaining a proper international relationship. Every international relationship has a reason behind it, whether good or bad.

The relationship between mainland China and Haiti is no exception. Since the reform and opening up, mainland China has always been active in building up international relationships with others and sends out special care for Latin American countries to build up a third world force. However, mainland China has not yet built up any diplomatic relationship with Haiti, renowned for its slavery-independent history.
The capital of China and Haiti have set up trade development offices. This facilitated China's assistance to Haiti later. After the earthquake in Haiti in January 2010, China provided more than 1 million yuan in cash exchange and many medical materials and rescue assistance to Haiti. Subsequently, the trade volume between China and Haiti increased year by year. Mainland China and Haiti have a lot in common, especially in their nature of being republic countries and their history of fighting hard to win independence. Despite the shared features, it is strange that they do not establish a diplomatic relationship. What leads to their relationship and the future direction of the relationship become questions worth exploring. When approaching this problem, it is found out that the failure to build up a diplomatic tie results from disagreement in sovereignty recognition, the economic urge, and the intermediary country's influence, but there is a possible positive future for their relationship.
