INTL 190 - Haiti in a Transnational Context

Conclusion

The people in The Bahamas are upset about the rise of Haitian immigration because they are coming in and taking all their resources and job opportunities. It would be different if Haitians were giving back and benefiting the Bahamas, but they are coming in, in swarms making it difficult for the Bahamas to continue their development. Haitian immigration to the Bahamas has become a very sad and difficult process because they are not welcomed to the island despite having a similar upbringing. The people of the Bahamas are very proud of the country they built and are rather selfish with their resources. To counter this issue they have invoked some rules and regulations that would help keep Haitians out. The most effective rule that the Bahamas implemented is the ability to obtain residency in this country. They created a process that is very long and expensive to impel anyone from coming onto this island. Cost is very important to this process because the Bahamas only want those who can afford to live here and have the ability to benefit and offer more to the country, making it almost impossible for Haitians immigrants to live in this country. Work permits have also been deemed very effective to keep Haitians out because of how difficult it is also to acquire. The government does not want just anyone to be able to get this permit because they don’t want to give all of the job opportunities to illegal immigrants. With so many natural disasters that occurred in both of these countries the number of Haitian immigrants is constantly increasing and the government in the Bahamas has become very strict on the borders.
