It is not surprising to find similar patterns within different forms of digital literature, as genres usually turn to other genres for inspiration and enhancement. In her article Interactive Fiction, Emily Short writes about Interactive Fiction and how different artists have structured their work into challenging players and their decisions in any given IF narrative. Short states, “several authors used IF to challenge the player’s moral preconceptions, presenting branching narratives in which each decision articulating a particular moral principle leads to an outcome further challenging that stance.” Interactive Fiction has as much control of direction of narrative as any textbook does, but differs in form by allowing the author to challenge the reader more effectively with the use of “interaction”. People turn to literature as a form of escape from their real life; therefore, expect to find freedom within their online interactions as real-life freedom is correspondently limited. Although this ideal truly applies, people are accustomed to having limitations of freedom in everyday interactions, which is resembled by the conversations experienced within Interactive Fiction. By leading players to believe their contribution majorly alters character responses, this facilitates a process whereby any subsequent lessons or epiphanies are understood by the reader as being experienced wholly based on their subjective choices.
