Chapter 3: Chaos

Skylar stopped his car in front of a big metal gate with the sign, "RESTRICTED AREA. No Trespassing. Government Property." Skylar scanned his eye and printed his thumb on the scanner. The gate opened and skylar drove inside the private facility. He parked his car on a place where there was nothing around. Then, a small ball-like machine with a propeller on top flied towards the car and scanned the car by letting out a laser-like beam from its center towards the car. Suddenly, the ground shook, and the area, where Skyler parked, descended underground. After the lift halted in a complete stop, Skyler got off from his car and walked to the elevator where he had to do the scanning process again. The elevator door opened. In the elevator was a bulky man standing straight, wearing a military officer cap and a suit with four stars on his shoulder patch.
"Hey, Doctor Stubborn," said General Buckenham with a smile on his face. He had a hideous scar across his left eye, which he claimed that he got it during one of the World War III battles.
"Shut up Scarface," Skyler countered back at the General. They were old friends and knew each other well. They promised each other when they were young that they would work for the government when they grew up , and both had kept their promises.
Skyler saw a collar-like necklace on the General's neck. "Is that the aSync?"
"Yeah, my daughter got it for me," said the General with pride. It's really convenient, and I'm not going to lie, but this shit really can do anything. Do you still not have one yet?"
Skyler sighs. "Nope. You know me. I don't trust those things that easily."
Rolling his eyes, "You're a really odd one," the General uttered, "I mean you're both a scientist and a technician at the same time. In short, your living is off of working with technology. Your career is about developing, using, and testing technology. But you're one of the most people I know who does not trust technology."
Skyler laughing, "I know it's a bit weird, but it just takes time for me to adjust to new things."
"Oh well, if it suits you that way, then whatever," said the General.
"By the way, why are you here?" asked Skyler, curious of why a military general would come to a government research facility.
"Oh, I have a meeting with the other generals and secretaries about the nuclear weapon. Apparently, it's top secret," answered the General as he was not sure of why he was there either. Skyler made a curious look but did not question him anymore.
The General got off the elevator, and Skylar took the elevator down to floor B5 where his lab was located. As soon as he got off the elevator, a security guard and a x-ray machine was standing in front of him like an airport security checkpoint. No unauthorized private or outside items were allowed beyond this point. So Skylar left his phone and car key in the locker, got his suitcase inspected, scanned his eye and thumb, and was good to go. As he passed beyond the titanium wall, he entered his lab, which looked like an ordinary lab: a white room with test tubes and microscopes on tables...WITH GIGANTIC ROBOT HANDS. There were crane-like mechanical hands, height of about 5 feet, helping the scientists in the lab. And beyond the lab was the view of a huge rocket-like missile behind the thick and narrow glass wall. That missile was the X-bomb, the world's most disastrous bomb. Skyler got into the dressing room, wore his white gown, and stretched a pair of blue rubber gloves down his hands. About a dozen men and women of scientists were already there, working on their research.
As soon as Skyler tried to wear his goggles, there was a loud gunfire sound that echoed outside the lab. Everyone froze where they were standing, and the lab was dead silent all of a sudden. Then, the titanium door opened and behind the door was the General standing with bloodstain all over his proud U.S. Military suit, holding a 0.45 ACP M15 Pistol in his right hand.
"Are you okay? What happened outside?" questioned one of the scientist in a shaky voice.
Suddenly, the General pointed the gun at the scientist and pulled the trigger. Blood splattered out from the scientist's head, and his body dropped hard on the tile floor. Everyone in the room started to shout and panic. Even Skyler could not hide his astonishment. He could not move from where he was standing. The General started shooting people in the lab. Dead bodies were everywhere. After a good amount of gunfires and blood on the floor and walls, the lab became dead silent again. Skyler was the only one alive, and it was only him and the General left in the room.
"Everything happened so suddenly and quickly. If this is a dream, please wake up right this moment," Skyler thought to himself in his mind. He did not know what to do at the moment. As he was gasping heavily, "General, I do not know why you are doing this, but please stop. Put the gun down...please." Skyler begged to the General.
There was no answer from the General. He just stared at Skyler, pointing the gun at him. Skyler tried to think of how he can stop this chaos, but he could not find any answer. The General was ready to pull the trigger, and Skyler closed his eyes tight, ready to accept his inevident death. As he closed his eyes, he heard the gun trigger its fire.
Skyler opened his eyes. He was still alive, unwounded. Instead, in front of him was the General, drop dead on the floor with red blood gushing out of his head. Skyler was confused. Then, he saw a man with a black suit with a gun in his hand entering through the lab entrance. Seeming through his looks and the earpiece that he had on, Skyler assumed he was an agent of some kind.
The man came close to Skyler. "You need to come with me," said the agent to Skyler in a hurry, "It's a Code Red. We got orders from the government to safely escort you."
"Wait, I don't get it," said Skyler confusingly.
"Just follow me right now. The president wants to meet you. He will tell you all the details," insisted the agent.
Without no choice, Skyler followed the agent. Right before leaving the room, he looked behind and saw the General's dead body one last time and walked out of the room.
