Phase II:
I assembled my materials based on what is considered to be early detective fiction.  The stories had to be before 1923, and had to feature certain elements of detective fiction.  This includes some sort of detective figure, who uses clues to solve a mystery or crime.  I tried to gather materials from a variety of sources, such as different time periods and backgrounds.  I gathered the majority of my corpus from Project Gutenberg.  The only exception was Whose Body?, which I gathered from University of Penn's digital library project celebrating women writers.   With my consultant, I have discovered the intricate connections between these authors, and what influence their writings as they invented this new genre of detective fiction.   i have also learned that many of the books share certain themes and locations, that reflect local and international events happening during that period of writing.  I have also discovered more obscure authors, some of whom created writing styles that were ahead of their time.
