Floresta (Ruby)

The Ruby Anthracite Mine was established in 1880. The mine is located in the Ruby Mountain at the head of the Anthracite Creek eleven miles west of Crested Butte, in Gunnison County, Colorado. The Denver and Rio Grande railroad in arrived in Floresta in 1893. In 1901, the Ruby Mine changed its name to the Spanish word Floresta. In Spanish the word Floresta translates to Forest in English. The Floresta field is known for the steep and densely wooded mountain slopes. The mine has a maximum elevation of 12,251 feet above sea level. The anthracite coal field was three feet thick. The anthracite coal crops out at altitudes of 10,000 feet or more. The Floresta Mine is the highest mine in terms of elevation in the United States and the second highest in the world.
