IML 340: Digital Argument: Firearm Festiscism and the Fifth Estate

Concept

If you asked a foreigner or "non-american" in the 80's what prevented the United States from truly changing their gun policies, there was a chance that people simply didn't know enough about the cultural implications to comprehend what gun control legislations would entail. As Ulmer explains in his book "Electronic Monuments", the online community of the 21st century has created a new form of governmental body that not only provides information better than any encyclopedia has ever done, it also established a revolutionary type of manifesting ideas and ideologies. The concept of a fifth estate might not sound unfamiliar today, but was in actuality a concept that existed way before the times of Wikileaks and other journalistic entities of the same nature.

On that note, what does this really mean in terms of my digital argument? As a foreigner myself in the 21st century, I suddenly have access to information about the conservative American gun-loving mentality that most generations never could imagine. Hours of footage, millions of articles, and more research studies than one could ever consume in a lifetime - all simply a few clicks away. The result is this video, which essentially visualizes a stream of consciousness and/or thought. This is important, because the "pro-gun" philosophy is more than just a passion for firearms. It's an entire culture, lifestyle, and to some extent - religion. I would even go as far as calling it a sexuality. The way many proponents speak about firing their weapons sounds more like a hormone-driven teenager describing a sexual encounter.

It would probably be naive to assume that my argument is gonna make any form of sustainable impact on anything or anyone. However, that does not mean it's not worth expressing. The fear-loaded and unpredictable state of today's gun debate does not serve anyone well unless something is done. In other words, unless either side of the argument sees a definite change in how we approach the subject, the anger and anxiety will keep climbing - something which could possible endanger the progress of modern society and future crime preventing legislations.

With that, I wish you a warm welcome to my scalar book about the undefined casual relationship between gun-loving Americans and their firearms. This is the Unsafe States of Arms.
