This exhibit mainly draws its materials from two rich collections, Bettina Aptheker Papers and Ruth-Marion Baruch and Pirkle Jones Photographs and Papers. The materials have been selected for their immediate relevance to local activism and their ability to stimulate curiosity, in addition to their ability to support case studies on activism from within institutions of power. 

With each link below, you can explore histories of activism against formations of the carceral state, situated geographically around UC Santa Cruz, the San Francisco Bay Area, and extending worldwide. You should feel free to either follow the path in the order I have suggested, or jump between pages at your will, keeping in mind that these histories are not comprehensive nor objective, but rather, my own interpretation and reading of these events.
