Idealism in E-Lit

Captain Geriatric by Corrie Smith

By Madhav Goel

What is idealism? To many, it is an idea of a world that can never truly be realized, a world that should be strived for, but never achieved. As such, it is no surprise that many works of literature utilize idealism as a central theme. Whether it is showing idealistic heroes, or just normal people striving to live up to their ideals, or perhaps even the consequences of idealism; idealism is present all around us. One work of literature that goes a step further, and shows a truly idealistic world (at least relative to the contemporary one) was Captain Geriatric by Corrie Smith.
Captain Geriatric is a story about an eighty-year-old superhero who acts as the guardian of an English town named Dumpleton. The story follows Captain Geriatric as he tracks down and captures criminal clowns, only to find that the clowns were smokescreen and another villain has been committing burglaries in the meantime. Captain Geriatric also tracks down and captures this criminal, with the help of the police chief.
is a piece of literature composed on Adobe Flash, and while it would be difficult to name a specific genre for Captain Geriatric, it most closely resembles a superhero, point-and-click adventure where the players use their mouse to click on objects of interest, or to progress to the next point in the story. One can play Captain Geriatric for one's self using the following link :

The story is idealistic, not because of its characters, but its setting. Captain Geriatric shows the player a world which is a kinder version of the contemporary world. In the world of Captain Geriatric, "killer clowns" don't kill anyone, but rather are just nuisances. In this Captain Geriatric becomes an idealistic work of literature.
