The death and destruction Smaug causes provides a war-like backdrop to observe the monstrosities committed by people in threatening situations. Most of all we get to see the Master of Laketown's own greed and the poetic justice he is served as a result. He tries to escape with as much gold as he can as well as a few guards. The boat is too slow on account of all the gold and he is mutinied. If his own greed causing his mutiny isn't poetic enough, he is killed by the falling corpse of Smaug after the dragon was shot down by a man the Master had arrested on fabricated charges to consolidate authority.
