6 Images of Monopolies as Fantastic Beasts: HIST419X Midterm Project

Standard Oil Octopus

This cartoon depicts a Standard Oil tank as an octopus with numerous tentacles stretched around not only steel and shipping industries, but also political establishments like the Capitol and the White House.  Its tentacles spread over a large distance of the globe, choking or killing a group of men at the bottom right side. This imagery represents the power of Standard Oil as an entity with literal grasp over various other industries (both competitors and other stages of production) on a global scale as well as sway over the very political entities that should be governing them.

Ultimately, the cartoon shows the greed and power of the corporation, implying a malicious intent towards individuals and smaller entities.
