Vriska Serket: Redemption?

Vriska Serket grew up on Alternia, home planet of the trolls, where she was required to kill other children and feed their corpses to the monstrous giant spider that was her caregiver. She is understandably violent, callous, and prone to use murder to solve her problems, but by her species' standards, this makes her a fine, upstanding troll, deserving of respect and fear. She relies on luck for most things, with her weapon of choice being eight enchanted d8 dice that give her more or less power based on their role. As a god, her title is "Thief of Light," which as she describes on several occasions, gives her "AAAAAAAAALLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLL the luck." Then she met John, and his infectious goodness made her pause.

Though by human standards, Vriska seems like a psychopath, when taken in context of her culture, she is much more understandable, and her regret speaks louder than her actions. Regret overcomes her culture, her biology even, and Vriska moves forward with her life trying to do one last good thing, to save the universe and defend her remaining friends. She wants to kill their game's Big Bad, a renegade game construct named Jack Noir, the same thing that killed John's father.

You could spend all day trying to understand Vriska, but there's no better way than standing in her shoes. Like the audience members in Augusto Boal's "Theater of the Oppressed," Homestuck puts you in each character's place to explore ways for an unfortunate story to turn out (Frasca 88), though this may not change the ultimate outcome.
