Humphrey began when Golden joked in the Carolina Israelite that the Minnesota Democrat would never be elected President with a first name like “Hubert.” Golden stumped for Humphrey as he successfully sought the Democratic nomination for president in 1968, and again in 1972, when he lost to George McGovern.
