Duke Ellington was born a year before the start of the 20^th century. He is was an American composer,

pianist, and bandleader of jazz orchestras. He started his orchestra in 1923

and led his band into 1974 when he passed away. He has won over a dozen Grammy

Awards. Ellington gained a national profile from his appearances at the Cotton

Club. A few of his best-known songs are “In a Sentimental Mood,” “Take the ‘A’

Train,” and “Caravan.”
