Data Critique
For The German Exile Network in the Film Industry, a network analysis was created with the help of a dataset containing important exile films surrounding anti-nazi themes and their contributors. This dataset was a culmination of data compiled by Wendy Perla Kurtz, Benno Herz, and Nikolai Blaumer as well as other raw information obtained from IMDB.com. This data contains an obvious selection bias, given films are chosen based on their relevance to the project subject. Therefore it is not the most comprehensive list. Furthermore, there was disconnectivity apparent in the network due to this selection, which left gaps in our analysis.
In addition, the script for twenty-four scenes in the play was the chosen dataset for Bertolt Brecht's "Fear and Misery of the Third Reich" Voyant Tools Analysis section in our research project. The script was only provided in PDF image files, thus converting to txt file forms utilizing the Cisdem converter was necessary in order to upload to the Voyant for text analysis. Most notably, the dataset was Brecht's first openly anti-Nazi themed work as a part of the German exile community. In fact, writing an analysis based on the dataset with a connection to our thesis was quite difficult because Brecht mainly portrayed a documentary picture of life in Nazi Germany along with some indirect criticism of the brutality of the Nazi regime in the script. Yet, the dataset was useful in ways to further examine the thoughts and different perspectives of what German citizens had to face at the time.
