Gilbert Salazar: Educator and Theater Artist
Gilbert Salazar has a Bachelors degree in Social Justice Education and a Masters degree in Applied Theater Arts. As a youth serving professional and educator Gilbert has developed curriculum and taught through such non-profit agencies as United Way of Monterey County, Monterey County Rape Crisis Center, and the Partnership for Los Angeles Schools. As an educator Gilbert has taught various life skills subjects to teens and young adults from anger management, sexual assault prevention and healthy relationship building, conflict transformation and social emotional learning. Much of these curriculums and topics have been taught with the use of theater and storytelling. As a graduate of USC’s Applied Theater Arts program with a heavy emphasis on Theater of the Oppressed, Gilbert has co-taught theater classes at Free LA School, part of the Youth Justice Coalition in Inglewood. Gilbert is currently working on synthesizing the topics of masculinity and violence prevention into a creative work both written and performative, as well as creating new forms of applied theater and praxis into old forms of education regarding conflict and empowerment. Gilbert has taught with Unusual Suspects Theater company at McClay Middle School in Pacioma helping students with a collaborative team of other teaching artists to create an original play. Gilbert is currently working on workshopping an original play.
With parents and professional adults Gilbert has led trainings in Restorative Justice theory and praxis including facilitation of Community Building Circles, Restorative Dialogue and Interventions, and Harm and Conflict preparation and circles. Gilbert has served as Restorative Justice Coordinator at Markham Middle School and Jordan High School working with staff on Restorative Justice training, coaching, and implementation with school staff and community partners, through the Partnership for Los Angeles Schools. He has received his Restorative Justice training from California Conference of Equality and Justice and with Restorative Justice Partners of Monterey County.
