Yahoo Messenger Alternatives

Yahoo is one of the oldest email service providers and still it has a huge user base from all over the world. The reason is it’s easy to use interface and so many other useful features that make it convenient to use for one and all. Yahoo has gifted its users with a lot of useful products such as Yahoo Search, Yahoo News, Yahoo Finance, Yahoo Answers, and many others. Not only this, Yahoo messenger was so popular among its users that it was the favorite time killer of internet users for as long as 20 years.

So let’s know more about Yahoo Messenger and what it is all about.

Yahoo Messenger Chat Service

Yahoo Messenger has been the favorite chat service of most of the internet users for quite long now. The messenger service was started with the Yahoo Chat room that was launched on 7 January 1977. It was introduced in the form of a public chat service and in 1999, it was renamed to Yahoo Messenger. Yahoo chat room service helped a lot in communicating and allowed making friends from all across the globe. For most of the people who were active on the internet during the 90s, Yahoo messenger was the first one of its kind that introduced people with instant messaging.

In 2012, Yahoo chat room service was shut down and Yahoo disclosed that they want to focus on other important things as the reason for the discontinuation of Yahoo Chat room service.

But again in 2015, an all-new Yahoo Messenger was introduced and it has all the exciting features that were not there in the older version. The messenger app allows sending free text messages, emoticons, Gifs, and documents as well. Not only this, but it also included VoIP, voicemail, video calling, and Flicker support are some of the additional features offered by Yahoo Messenger.

But again the Yahoo messenger users got disappointed when the new messenger app even got discontinued in 2018. Sometime later, Yahoo Together was introduced but it was too taken down in April 2019. ‘Yahoo Together’ was called a cheap dupe and was criticized by others in the IT industry. It was called a copy of Slack, a platform used to keep employees in one place, as the Yahoo app was similar in terms of functioning. If you consider its visual scheme, it is almost similar to that of Slack. The other features are also similar but still, Yahoo lacked in some of the areas, maybe that could be the reason for its shut down.

When the decision to shut down the Yahoo messenger app came, users were given some time if they wanted to download their chats, history or archives.

So from 2019, there is no Yahoo messenger app available, however, there was news that Yahoo is going to introduce Yahoo squirrel app for the same purpose, but there is no confirmation as of now. If you are looking for Yahoo chat service on Google and getting Yahoo app results, those can be spam. No official Yahoo app for chatting is available presently.

Alternatives to Yahoo Messenger

It has been quite long now that Yahoo has ended its chat service. There are several other options available on the internet that work better than those older versions of Yahoo messenger. Currently, you can choose from Whatsapp, Facebook Messenger, Skype, Google Voice, Google Hangout to exchange text messages or audio and video calling.

All these apps are way technologically advanced if compared to Yahoo chat room or Yahoo Messenger. There is a lot of competition going on in the internet world where every other day a new app is introduced and several apps are taken down. The reason is you need to provide some extra features to survive the tough competition among messaging apps. That was the most prominent reason for which Yahoo put a full stop to all of its messenger services one by one as it was not able to match the level of others available in the market. Maybe in the future, it will come up with something that is more advanced and can cope with the existing competition. But for now, no messenger service is available under the name of Yahoo, you can choose from the other alternatives available on the internet.
