Taking a Closer Look at Elsa's Glove Through Song
Directed as an animated musical, Frozen highlights this internal identity crisis through the lyrics of song. For instance, when the camera zooms into a medium long shot from an extreme long shot in the beginning of the “Let It Go” scene, Elsa’s somber lyrics are invoked in the emotional appearance on her face (Buck). Through her words, “The wind is howling like this swirling storm inside,” the howling wind is Elsa’s cry for help to avenge the fear of her powers (A. Lee). These emotions reinforce the idea of the glove: a glove usually thought of as comfort and protection is portrayed in this film as a restraint and confinement. Particularly, in referencing “this swirling storm inside,” Elsa reveals the battle within herself and her feelings of being trapped (A. Lee). The “swirling” of the storm shows how these ideas of expressing her true self are constantly being thought about when she wears the gloves, and the idea of the “storm” is that these ideas are growing even stronger (A. Lee). Moreover, the constraints of the gloves are revealed further when Elsa comments that she “couldn’t keep it in” (A. Lee). Keeping her from her powers, the gloves also remind her to hide her feelings of anger and troubles. Essentially, the “it” Elsa refers to is the “swirling storm inside,” the internal struggle she faces alone to find her true self (A. Lee).
