Receptacle
Receptacle examines the excess of fragmentary objects such as vessels and architecture encountered during archaeological excavation. The fragmentary nature of these artifacts hints at both what was once there and is now missing. Their excessive numbers allow for a reconstruction of the daily lives of individuals in the past.
Architectural remains, from domestic structures to public buildings, reveal the numerous functional and imagined possibilities of space as a container. Buildings both codify and are codified by social relations, and their fragmentary remains give insight into how communities structured their environments. On a much smaller scale, vessels used in daily life also functioned as containers. Fragments of these containers exhibited here in ceramic, glass, and metal are used to reconstruct both the individual object and entire assemblages of vessels. This display seeks to juxtapose the fragmentary nature of these remains as they come out of the ground with their potential reconstructions.
