Nate ft. Cyclonious New World

This song and video were chosen because of the lyrical content, visual poetics and identity politics of its creators. Nate is part of an a Egyptian diaspora whose displacement is directly related to British colonialism and imperialism. Cyclonious is a British hip hop artist who is part of an African diaspora and whose experience is connected to historical lineage of the Black Atlantic and forced migration.

I chose to begin this mixtape with this track because lyrically they communicate the complexity of resistance to coloniality. They underscore the need to decolonize our minds as individuals and to connect personally liberation to emancipatory social struggles. Nate in his last verse highlights a desire to live in a borderless world where categories of exclusion are not creating epistemic violence. The idea that humans are currently living in reverse is a powerful challenge and juxtaposition concepts of modernity upon which coloniality thrives.

The video is produced by a collective called GlobalFaction which seeks to create visual content which highlights the interconnectness of media and social justice.
