Introduction
Andy B. is a recent PhD graduate, who is a professor at a prestigious midwestern university. He has a full teaching load and is working on 2 articles. One afternoon when he was packing up to go home for the weekend, there was a knock on his office door. Andy turned around and saw the Dean of his School, The Ambassador. The Ambassador told Andy that the University Press is going to put out a call for contributions to what would be their new book on Security Studies. He thought Andy should contribute a chapter on some aspect of Terrorism.
Andy politely declined and explained to The Ambassador that this would not be possible since he had a full teaching load, besides he was already editing 1 article while writing another one. Then, The Ambassador said, “Well, I was offering you this wonderful opportunity to shine since I thought you were a smart junior faculty member, but I guess I will give it to the top Security Studies scholar in the School who is planning on going up for Full Professor. Good luck with your march towards tenure.” Andy recognized he was being goaded and knew his articles were going to be published; he had nothing to prove, after all he was a Blue Devil. Furthermore, Andy was an avid library user while pursuing his doctorate and during New Faculty Orientation several of the Fabulous Librarians did presentations on Library resources and services. Obviously, The Ambassador did not know with whom he was dealing, Andy B. had research skills! But alas, there is a reason why Pride is the first of the Seven Deadly Sins, and before he knew it Andy had stopped The Ambassador and committed to writing a chapter in the book. The Ambassador played his hand very well and was quite satisfied with himself as he escaped down the corridor before Andy B. could change his mind!
The next day, Andy got up early and was feeling kind of glum driving back to the University instead of enjoying a relaxing weekend. But after he got out of his car his spirits lifted when he came upon the most Fantastical Place on Campus, The Library!
How will Andy B. find information to write his book chapter? Will his manuscript be accepted by the University Press? If you have gotten this far clearly you want to know! Follow along and find out how Andy B. turns the tables on The Ambassador!
