BTS and Kpop
The entire section on BTS and KPop was very interesting to me. I had enjoyed listening to BTS since my sophomore year and got a lot of my friends into it. I never really looked into the industry that was KPOP or its relation to the government. However, the idea that pop culture is political really made me analyze what exactly KPOP was. Korea is trying to brand itself and market itself as a fun loving happy place. That’s why they love KPOP. It’s bright colors, pretty girls and cute boys dancing and singing. Also, there is nothing criticizing the government or talking about the dangers going on in Korea right now. The idea of cultural appropriation was also brought up. With the example of Black Pink and their mechanical hip-hop was just blatantly cultural appropriation. They were using another culture, stripping it of its meaning, and using it for profit. That was also something I never really thought about when I had listened to KPop in the past. I was a prime example of what the Korean government wanted. Not thinking about the issues and just singing with the catchy tunes
