Thanks for your patience during our recent outage at scalar.usc.edu. While Scalar content is loading normally now, saving is still slow, and Scalar's 'additional metadata' features have been disabled, which may interfere with features like timelines and maps that depend on metadata. This also means that saving a page or media item will remove its additional metadata. If this occurs, you can use the 'All versions' link at the bottom of the page to restore the earlier version. We are continuing to troubleshoot, and will provide further updates as needed. Note that this only affects Scalar projects at scalar.usc.edu, and not those hosted elsewhere.

I had enjoyed listening to BTS since my sophomore year and got a lot of my friends into it. I never really looked into the industry that was KPOP or its relation to the government. However, the idea that pop culture is political really made me analyze what exactly KPOP was. Korea is trying to brand itself and market itself as a fun loving happy place. That’s why they love KPOP. It’s bright colors, pretty girls and cute boys dancing and singing. Also, there is nothing criticizing the government or talking about the dangers going on in Korea right now. The idea of cultural appropriation was also brought up. With the example of Black Pink and their mechanical hip-hop was just blatantly cultural appropriation. They were using another culture, stripping it of its meaning, and using it for profit. That was also something I never really thought about when I had listened to KPop in the past. I was a prime example of what the Korean government wanted. Not thinking about the issues and just singing with the catchy tunes
