Literary Elements And The Importance Of Lyrics In Fight Song
Winarata decided to write an article called Figurative and Imagery Within the “Fight Song”. This article thoroughly analyzes the lyrics of Fight Song using literary devices to figure out the meaning of each line of the song and teaches us how to do the same. This is article is meant to provide data and information gathered from research. “Launguage carries meanings and messages. To deliver these contents, language utilizes its power through what we call figure of speech or figurative language to emphasize, eggarate, soften, etc.” (Figurative And Imagery Within The Fight Song, Page 2). Literary devices such as similes, metaphors, hyperboles, and personification are used by the writer/singer to provide a deeper meaning that could inspire and captivate it’s audience.
The article draws from the song “Fight Song” as the author is determined to gather what the artist, Rachel Platten, intended her lyrics to mean. The structure of this article shows that the author is a person who has gathered a great amount of information on the topic. In order to convince the reader that the information they provide is accurate, they provide the research mechanisms, background of figurative language and definitions of specific literary devices that were used in their research. This background information also helps educate the reader so that they can develop a greater understanding of the broader topic of figurative language. Finally, the author includes data and concludes their argument. The author used the method of library research in order to gather their data. They would then go the lyrics as the primary source and underline and take notes in order to organize their material.
The author argues that literary devices can enhance the meaning and our understanding of a musical piece. In order to prove this point they provide their data from Fight Song, the data references each line, providing the literary device used, and analyzes how it gives added meaning to the line. For the line right before the pre chorus “I might only have one match, but I can make an explosion”, the author informs the reader that this is a hyperbole and states the encouraging message which just that one line provides. “No matter how small your power or motivation is, if you constanlty use it, it will bring huge changes or improvements.” (Figurative And Imagery Within The Fight Song, Page 6). By recognizing that this line contained a hyperbole the author was able to determine what it’s deeper meaning was and how it can be applied to our daily lives. Through their research, they discovered that the main theme of the song is to keeping fighting and never give up, no matter what life throws at you.
One learns through this research that literary devices can be used to discover the hidden meanings of lyrics and to help a listener connect with the song. Once we understand what the lyric means, it is more likely to have an effect on our perspective, personality, and our views on different areas of life. Understanding the lyrics of a song also allows listeners to envision what the artist was going through while writing the lyrics. This enables the listener to artist musically and, perhaps, personally. As Winaratar analyzed the lyrics of Fight Song, they realized that “To keep fighting, she needs this inner power though it is probably as small as a small boat on a vast ocean of fear but if she keeps moving this small boat, it will send waves constantly in motion.” (Figurative And Imagery Within The Fight Song, Page 5).
In my own work, I would like to draw upon the author’s determination and willingness to provide every aspect of data needed in order to give the reader a thorough view of what I discovered. The author showed what they gathered from each line of the song instead of just providing a few examples. Seeing the whole set of data allowed me to truly understand the meaning of the lyrics and how they were connected to literary devices.
