Introduction
Think of an action film. Who is the lead? Most often, people think of Tom Cruise in the Mission Impossible franchise, Vin Diesel in the Fast & Furious franchise, or the Liam Neeson Taken trilogy. Or perhaps the films and actors that comes to mind are from before the 1990s, such as Sylvester Stallone in First Blood (1982) and Rambo: First Blood Part II (1985), Arnold Schwarzenegger in The Terminator (1984) or Predator (1987), or Mel Gibson and Danny Glover in Lethal Weapon (1987) and sequels.
What is one thing all of these leading men have in common in the 2020s? They're all in their fifties, sixties, or older. For most of them, their characters have aged with them over time as their film franchises have spanned decades. Others, like Keanu Reeves in the John Wick franchise, created new iconic roles at fifty years of age. The question becomes: where are the women action stars in their fifties?
This project was created to address that question by compiling a list of female action stars in their fifties and older to highlight their roles over the years and draw attention to their unique stories and issues as women of action.
