Transcription
A text in italics will indicate what the passage actually says. This helps the reader to understand what they are looking at.

Comment
A Scalar annotation should have several components. If the handwriting in the area highlighted is difficult to read, it should have a transcription first. Then, it should have a brief observation of the detail (what it is), followed by a plausible interpretation of that detail. Some annotations might have media for comparative illustration, like this:
