Being Wronged

Hobo Lobo of Hamelin: Colour and Sound

Color

In Hobo Lobo color is used to create a distinction between the background and the foreground. This is done to make it easier to differentiate between objects on the page and to bolster the 3D depth of field effect made using the Parallax.js library which will be discussed in further detail on the next page.

In this image the mayor is addressing a passerby. Interesting both are a golden yellow even though the mayor has much more power than the citizen who passes by. If we look closely we can see that the mayor is a darker shade of gold than the passerby which draws a subtle distinction in their status yet indicates how at the end of the day both are from the same town.

The sky is blood red to not only make both figures stand out but to also depict the mood the mayor has at the time. He is anxious about the upcoming elections and wants to desperately take control. So much so that he will stop at nothing and no one to achieve his goals. Red is a color that symbolizes determination, power, strength bloodshed etc. For this reason it is used here. The use of red also foreshadows the unjust treatment the mayor will eventually have for Hobo Lobo.

This is another image where there are lots of colors used and the sky in the background is a darker color to contrast the lighter and brighter colors in the foreground. This is the moment when Hobo Lobo realizes that he has accomplished his task so he imagines all the luxurious items that will be his. However the off screen surrounding the image is again a blood red which becomes a motif in that it foreshadows the ultimate betrayal of the mayor.

Sound

In this sequence we hear the laughter of the children of Hamelin and also hear Hobo Lobo playing a banjo to lure the children into a trap. He aims to seek revenge on the mayor for him breaking the contract they agreed upon. This soundscape adds another dimension to the visuals and allows readers to witness Hobo Lobo's trick on the children as if they were there watching from a hidden vantage point. This scene represents the aftermath of Hobo Lobo being wronged by the mayor and the soundscape helps justify Hobo Lobo's act of retaliation as one that is necessary to teach the mayor a lesson.
