Today in Altgeld Gardens, the population has increased a good amount. The industrial sites that were causing all the pollution, many of them were shut down while a few of them still remain causing residents different problems. Some of the housing units that residents live at in the past, had been gated off and shut down. Those residents in those housing units had either passed away or moved on to a safer living area. Once all the residents left, that is when Chicago Housing Authority decided to gate them off and shut them down.

    Crime rates in Altgeld Garden have gone up in the recent years. There are many gangs in this area and they tend to murder at least one person everyday. In memory of those who have passed away or died from these gangs, the residents made a wall that is dedicated to those individuals; every individual’s name is added onto this wall.
