It was known simply as The University Library until 1956 when it was dedicated as the Louis Round Wilson Library. The beaux-art style building was designed by architect A. C. Nash, assisted by William M. Kendall. Construction of the four-story building was funded with a $625,000 appropriation from the NC General Assembly and by donations from alumni and friends. By 1929 it housed 219,814 volumes and became the home of the North Caroliniana Collection and the Southern Historical Collection.
