In January 1927 Jones wrote to UNC President Chase regarding his desire to start this bookstore, saying, “Incidentally, I would like to get my students not merely to read, but to buy, books! Is it at all possible to start an informal bookstore in my office for such a purpose, or is that a misuse of university property? The profits (God save the mark!) would not, I think, exist” (MacMillan 32). In the following years it moved to the YMCA building, then the ground floor of Wilson Library, and finally to the Josephus Daniels Student Stores building in 1968. The Bull’s Head Bookshop has been operated by Barnes and Noble since 2016.
