Amy Locklear's Mini-Bio

My name is Amy Locklear, and I'm a part-time, Distance PhD student here at ODU. I started my coursework back in 2012, and little by little I'm working my way toward figuring out my dissertation interests. I'm originally from Virginia Beach, but thanks to the USAF I currently live in Alabama, in a little town just north of Montgomery. I'm a full time Instructor for the Composition Program at Auburn University-Montgomery, where I've taught since 2003 (first as an adjunct fresh out of a Master's program). I'm married and have two grown children -- so yes, I'm officially the oldest one here! :D

I started my education as a biology major at William & Mary (marine science focus), but Physics redirected my path to English Lit in my Junior year. Since then, and aside from being a wife and mom, I've been a tech writer for NASA, a freelance copy editor, a journal editor for Decision Sciences, an administrator for an archaeology research institution, a photographer, a graduate student writing about rhetoric and Elie Wiesel, and now a teacher. But all along the way, I've been a life-long learner. Which probably explains one of my favorite words: Cool!

My research interests made this course the perfect fit, but for me it's also all about addressing the question, "how can I make my classroom pedagogy and practices better?" I'm already a big fan of the interdisciplinary focus of our program, but especially so when it means I get to explore a combination of rhetoric, learning theories, technology, and neuroscience in a class like ours this semester! I want to be a reflective technology user, considering the theory (especially the rhetorical angles) as well as the practice. I've already taken a few theory-dense courses here, and I'm ready to put that into practice in this class! This semester at AUM, I'm piloting an iPad-mediated freshman research and argument writing course, and I'm looking forward to exploring the synchronicity of these two educational experiences together!
