Heather's Digital Literacy Freewrite

Digital Literacy

To me, this means the ability to work, explore, and feel comfortable within a digital environment.  This may include accessing information, sharing information, and also presenting information in some meaningful way.  I am very comfortable in digital environments (though not as comfortable as my kiddos).  That said, this class has already mentioned several technology programs that I have never heard of.  I learn in digital environments by trial and error and can usually figure out what I’m supposed to be doing.  Digital literacy is important for students of all ages, but suffers from the challenges of economics in terms of access.

Technology is an area with its own cultural rules, operational standards and language.

Digital Literacy offers other barriers as well.  When my 3rd grader has to take standardized tests via computer, I wonder how students may be limited by typing skills, technical skills, and visual challenges.  This raises concerns about access and accessibility.
