Digital Literacy Freewrite
Freewrite: What is digital literacy?
Being
literate in digital environments; knowing how to perform certain functions on a
computer, how to use “basic” programs (Word, Gmail, Facebook); how to interact
with a computer and USE IT to get what I want, not to feel intimidated or used
by a computer.
To be
literate is to operate a technology for a certain end or certain ends; to use
it for a variety of purposes; to communicate and interact with others, to use software to do or
produce something; I think of technologies as tools—I have a very traditional view of
technology and this is surprising
·
I
can use a phone to make calls, send texts, check and compose emails, etc.; I
use it to communicate and collect artifacts
My notion
of literacy as traditional reading and writing—paper-based; to be literate is
to know how to speak and write
My view of
technologies as tools for reading and writing; they mediate the process and
don’t necessarily shape it, or am I just not aware of how they shape it?
·
Literacy: to communicate, in writing
·
Technologies:
tools to mediate
communication; limited definition;
·
Digital
literacy as knowing how to do stuff with computers; to control them?
