Wolfe Poem 3 Annotation 1

The fact that the poem is entitled “Uphill” indicates that the poem does exactly what it is describing. The entirety of the poem is a conversation strictly in a question and answer format. Questions are read in an uphill fashion, as inflections of the voice are raised higher in pitch from beginning to end; there is no possible way to read a question in monotone. This is imperative to the meaning of the poem because at the end of the question, an answer is always given, just as at the end of a long, stressful journey an eternity with the Holy Spirit will be given to them.
