ENGL 1102 Radiation Ecohorror

60 Seconds

60 Seconds is a comedy-survival game developed by Polish indie-games company Robot Gentlemen. The game was released in 2015 and saw an expansion in 2019, through 60 Seconds: Reatomized, which would introduce new graphics and content. However, the general gameplay would remain unchanged. At the start of the game, the player is allowed 60 seconds to gather their family members and scavenge supplies around their home before a nuke hits (“Robot Gentlemen”). From there, the player would have to survive in a nuclear fallout shelter, ration their supplies, send family members on explorations into the irradiated wasteland around their home, and make difficult choices in innumerable events throughout the game that could either benefit or challenge the success of their playthrough.

The developers of Robot Gentlemen took inspiration from their love of the nuclear post-apocalyptic genre and took notice that many previous games had focused on surviving in a “new world,” after nuclear bombs had finished reshaping the world. The “Fallout” game series would be a good example of this. In their game, however, Robot Gentlemen wished to dive into the unknown territory of how it would be like to survive during the immediate nuclear disasters that would occur after a nuclear attack. Through this representation, Robot Gentlemen would create a game that would allow their players to experience what a post-nuke world could be like in another light.
