Initially I believed writing an exploratory essay on a picture would be an extremely difficult task, but it was clearly just a mental obstacle I had to overcome. It was more of a breeze once I actually attempted it. Before jumping into the writing process, I did extensive research to help me understand the background story of the picture, Melania Trump in heels, and also attempted to understand the rationale behind the backlash coming from her critics. For the thesis workshop we had in class I finished my essay and thought it was good to go for submission. However, it was that class that helped me to recognize that I did not understand what was expected of me in the essay. I was able to compose a better thesis and reconstruct my essay to support my stance.

I picked the “Melania in heels” photo because I felt that for whatever reason the photo went viral I would have an easy time arguing for or against Melania Trump (I am already not very fond of her or her husband). Yet, I believe that despite my dislike for the first lady, I provided a fair argument as to why I personally felt she projected a callous persona. I did not just argue against her because I do not like her, I argued against her because I felt she truly demonstrated a lack of empathy for the victims of Hurricane Harvey. She literally did not put herself in their shoes, physically and metaphorically.

I hope for my paper to educate its reader on how even the most trivial actions taken by important figures such as the president and the and the first lady can be read into and misinterpreted. However, I do believe that some of those actions reveal a greater truth about the person being judged as a whole. Although her critics and I both share the same opinion on why Melania Trump should not have worn heels, I do believe that social media exacerbated the situation. Like I mentioned in my exploratory essay, “Evidently her heels do not have any direct affect on crises happening in the United States; America is not doomed because Melania Trump put on the wrong pair of shoes.” The criticism about her does not change her status, affluence, or even impact Harvey-hit victims in any way.
