Visual Narratives of Early Emory Student Life at Oxford

About our Project

Background

What begun as a productive conversation about utilizing Special Collections as a teaching tool has transformed into a multi-semester, student-centered, research-driven project.  The Oxford College Photographic Collection, housed within the Oxford College Library Special Collections and Archives, encompasses a rich photographic history of our campus. This digitization and metadata project seeks to make these images more widely available to faculty, staff, students, and alumni.  Our project is generously supported by the Oxford College Library and Dean Kitty McNeill, and the Oxford Research Scholar Program.

Ellie Agler
Ellie is a history major at Emory University. She is expected to graduate in Spring 2020.

Annalys Hanson
Annalys is a 2018 graduate of Oxford College, pursuing a BS in Anthropology and Human Biology. She enjoys anthropology's broad and interdisciplinary approach and is interested in combining perspectives from a range of fields, such as chemistry, biology, history, and primatology. Her work in Visual Narratives of Early Emory History incorporated her interest in history, archiving, and research strategies to create a project that was accessible and holistic. She plans on continuing onto either medical school or graduate school for biological anthropology after graduating from Emory College in 2020.

Laura Cortina
Laura is part of Oxford's 2018 graduating class, and is a double major in political science and philosophy. For Laura, this project was a way to engage with the Oxford community in a way that added to its culture of rich tradition. In the future, she plans to study immigration law while pursuing her passion for theater.

Tasha Dobbin-Bennett
Tasha is an Assistant Professor of Art History and Studio Art at Oxford College.  Originally from New Zealand, she earned her Ph.D. from Yale University in the Department of Near Eastern Languages and Civilizations.  Prior to starting at Oxford College she was the Papyrologist at the Beinecke Rare Book and Manuscript Library, where she oversaw the digitization, creation of metadata, and research into the ancient papyri collection. She serves as co-instructor for this project.

He holds an MA in English from the University of Florida, an MLIS from Valdosta State University, and is a PhD student in the University of Georgia's Educational Theory (Critical Studies) program.
