The cover of “Red Man’s Greeting” situates the years 1492 and 1892 on either side of a wampum belt which visually articulates the ongoing violence from “Landing of Columbus” into Pokagon’s present-day, recasting the Chicago World’s Fair as a continuation of this violence rather than the celebration of progress that its attendees imagined. Pokagon points this accusation towards his audience, articulating “the discovery of America” as “our own funeral” later in the contents of the birch bark booklet (1).
