The granddaughter responds in exclamation

The narrative shifts abruptly, reminding readers that the central figure of the story is actually the granddaughter who must learn its lessons. We see she is invested in the story through her exclamations and her groundedness on her "bed of sweet-grass" (134). She seeks confirmation from her grandmother while also demonstrating that she is a willing and active audience member. This scene also supports the claim that later on--when she falls asleep--she is already invested in dreaming the continuance of this story.
