Sweeping Contents

Although the table of contents could be the first opportunity to gain a sense of the author’s identity, experience, or voice, the list of contents for Life Among the Piutes to some degree resists such disclosure. These lines eschew an individual scale for sweeping generalities—although this seems to contradict the close first person and focus on emotionality apparent in the book’s first chapters, they do work to signal the ethnographic content that eventually makes its way into the text.
