Early Indigenous Literatures

SN-P4

Originally titled as the "Red Man's Rebuke," this version of the "Brief History of Simon Pokagon" is seemingly published in the midst of this titular change being decided. While "rebuke" is the word that the printing press proceeds with, it is crossed out in ink so that "Greeting" can overwrite it. Sometime between the printing of the paratextual materials to accompany the birch bark booklet, the title transformed from "Red Man's Rebuke" to "Red Man's Greeting" which suggests hesitancy to stage such an aggressive, accusatory piece of writing to fairgoers at the 1893 Chicago World's Fair.
Here, the word "rebuke" is crossed out in ink and written above it in ink is the word "Greeting"
