Early Indigenous Literatures

Editor

The name of Winnemucca’s editor is granted nearly as much prominence as that of the author herself. While the equally-sized typeface afforded to the editor could detract from the author’s significance or serve as a supplemental source of authority, it also alerts us to the extent to which Winnemucca’s text emerged from a network of interpersonal relationships. As Carolyn Sorisio has argued, Winnemucca was committed to “nonhierarchal, elective affiliations” that ultimately framed both her text and its circulation (Sorisio 86).
